TEACHER:                Jane Steele is the owner of River House Rug Hooking Studio, Petite Riviere Bridge , NS.  Jane studied textile marketing in England and worked with many European Mills supplying the UK garment industry.  Moving to Nova Scotia in 2010, Jane started to plan a way to put her knowledge and love of colour, fabric and design into a business.  She learned how to hook and quickly became “hooked”.

CLASS:                 This workshop will cover various aspects of design, with the end purpose of designing several rug patterns, any of which the participants may transfer onto linen for their own personal use.

We will explore traditional designs – oriental, Celtic, floral, Jacobean, geometric, Lunenburg, Garrett – and more contemporary ideas including impressionist landscapes, tessellations, stained glass, whimsy, portraits, animals, abstracts.

We will consider border designs and how to use them, background pattern and how to use it.

We will draw landscapes, faces, flowers, make templates, tessellations and generally experiment with format, shape, space, pattern.

We will compare freehand drawing with pattern transferral by red dot/light box.

We will create patterns from the following options – depending on time and preference:-

- an old fashioned, primitive floral

- a funky landscape

- a bunch of hat ladies

- a modern paisley                                  Plus any other requests!

I will also talk briefly about how to choose hooking materials and colours to suit the pattern, and why.

SUPPLIES:     Jane will also bring linen, red dot and supplies to sell and plans to hand out paper, pens and pencils.  You can also                                              bring your own drawing supplies, hooks/frames if you feel the need to do some hooking as a respite to designing.
