Criteria for “Rug Hooking Artist of the Year”

We welcome applications from any individual rug hooking artists.

The Hooked Rug Museum of North America (HRMNA) preserves and displays the history of rug hooking.  In order to maintain the continuity of rug hooking history it is necessary to showcase contemporary work to reflect the evolution of the art as we have moved from a utilitarian craft to a fine art.  It is very important to continue to move forward with research into the art and craft of rug hooking.

Being a “Rug Hooking Artist of the Year” for the HRMNA is an honour.  Visitors to the museum come from all over the world to view the artifacts and the exhibits of the two selected artists which are on display for the entire season (from May until October).

HRMNA is a federally registered charity that is operated by volunteers.  We have created the following criteria to be used in the selection of each year’s honouree:

1.   the “Rug Hooking Artist of the Year” must be willing to support and promote the museum;

2.   he/she must curate his/her exhibit, providing background information on all pieces chosen for exhibition;

3.   he/she will be responsible for shipping and packaging costs of rugs to and from the museum, and have personal insurance coverage for their rugs during transit and at the Museum;

4.   the Incoming Exhibit Agreement must be signed by both parties (honouree and HRMNA);

5.  applicants must provide to HRMNA, via email, a portfolio of work proposed for exhibit for a five month period as well as a biography that will be reviewed by the selection committee (website may also be provided if applicable); and

6.   applications for ‘Rug Hooking Artist of the Year’ must be submitted on the required form to the Board of HRMNA.

Please ensure that all the above criteria can be met before making a submission.

 The selection committee will make the final decision and will also determine which of the artist’s rugs will be exhibited.

Commencing in 2014, all submissions must be in by September 30th of the current year.  Decisions will be made by the committee by year end for the following year’s exhibit.
