TEACHER: Cindy Irwin - Cindy is a friend of ours from Lancaster, PA and is a Pearl K. McGown Certified Rug Hooking Teacher who has a home studio where she teaches rug hooking classes. She began hooking rugs while on vacation in Michigan. She got a five minute lesson on pulling loops and bought a kit. It was a fine, shaded, floral piece that she turned into a pillow top. The next year, she bought a pattern and some precut #6 strips. It took her three years to finish it. While she was buying a supply of strips in the third year, she picked up a Bliss cutter and asked how to use it. She had no idea you could cut your own wool! She bought the cutter and a beginner book on dyeing and went back to Pennsylvania.
Completely overwhelmed, she put everything away with her stained glass materials, ornamental plastering materials, decorative finishing materials, cross-stitch, and knitting materials… I think you get the idea. One day while carpooling to a Master Gardener class, the driver stopped at Rebecca Erb's (wool shop) and changed her life. She then invited Cindy to join her rug hooking group and introduced her to her first teacher and mentor, Peggy Hannum. She has never looked back! From drawing a pattern, selecting the colors, dyeing the wool, and finally creating a rug that is completely unique, rug hooking satisfies every creative urge she has ever had.
Cindy is a McGown certified Mc Gown teacher and President of The Conestoga Rug Crafters Guild, as well as a juried member of the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen. She is known for her beautiful purses, working with alternate materials and gemstones. She can teacher all cuts and styles. Her work, wool, and patterns can be
